360 OandP Blog July 2011

Helping fellow amputees, and those who wear orthotic braces regain their SELF-ESTEEM and PRIDE enhancing the quality of lives.

After my leg was ripped off, my self-esteem was too!

Embarrassed, so I covered my prosthetic up so good nobody knew I wore a artificial leg. This was the only restoration treatment 90% of amputees had to choose from for the last 40 or more years.

20 some years later, I began wearing my prosthetic with the aluminum tubing exposed. Then one day, I became employed in training as a OandP technician. One week later, I'm fabricating my very own prosthetic socket. This time I wanted it different. So I added my own personal design, art to my own socket of fiery hot flames to remind me of the pain I once had.

WOW! You know what happened, my pride and courage went thru the roof! I set out with vision to help others experience this great feeling. I really enjoyed the fabrication side and opportunity. After watching them be made and the reward knowing every brace and prosthetic I made with my hands would help another individual.

Thank you for reading my blog

Dan Horkey helps amputees and those who wear orthopedic braces regain self-esteem, image and pride enhancing the quality of lives.

In 2008, amputee - entrepreneur Dan Horkey founder of GTOPI.com set out to develop the first company of its kind to offer state of art innovations that are automotive quality, durable finish, similar to what you see on street rods and choppers.

Dan calls the end results “tattoos” since the artwork is air brushed to a artificial body part, and helps people feel good about themselves and express their own personality and interests.

The VA is now purchasing our patent pending methods of restorations for prosthetic limbs orthopedic devices because it's such an important part of their daily lives.

A story from a fellow amputee cements why Dan Horkey's vision to be the first business of it's kind to create new technology by Airbrushing Tattoos and apply ing automotive colors onto prosthetic arms, prosthetic legs, orthopedic braces, cranial and TBI helmets.

Chad's story in his own words.

I have spent a good ten years searching for a way to tattoo my left (BE) prosthesis. I was thinking airbrush but could never find an artist that wanted to touch it. I am also missing most of my right leg and some fingers on my right hand from birth. I developed a weird humor about it growing up. Today at 39 I am a struggling comedian just telling my side of the story and sharing my odd thoughts with the world. I am doing alright and people tell me have what it takes to make it.

The funny part is that I was a shut in before I started doing comedy. I avoided the world as much as possible. It came to a point I was tired of not being able to take care of myself and making people laugh is all I am really skilled at. So I started chasing my dream and intend to keep following it as long as my heart still beats. Nothing in life has ever made me feel as good as I do on that stage.

I have a lot of confidence that this is what I was made for, but I still feel incomplete when I see a picture of myself and that bland lifeless excuse for flesh tone paint on my arm stares back at me. See I wanted to be a rock star growing up but it turned out you needed fingers to play an instrument or actually be able to sing. I have neither ability. I can do comedy and I have great potential at it, but what I cannot do is proudly wear a sleeve on both arms.

It has taken me 18 years to acquire the ink I have to date and I am just getting to putting the color to my right arm. I had a friend tell me I would never have two sleeves because I don't have an arm, and as much as I wanted to argue it I really couldn't. That bugged me and began my search which has brought me to you. Our paths met through a Google search of "How can I tattoo my artificial arm". I was amazed at your site and technique.

I would love more than anything to get this done to my arm. I could go far with the confidence boost this would give me. all the way to the top if I ever get my way. Keep up the good work you are doing!
