ACA Lobby Date on Capitol Hill March 10, 2009

Staff Writer

I heard this morning that Good Morning America featured a story about an insurance company that denied coverage for  a woman's C-Leg prostheses.  Of course, thanks to this exposure and the efforts from GMA, the insurance company reconsidered and granted coverage for her prosthetic limbs... finally.

Unfortunately, this happens every day.  Limitations vary and can be as extreme as limiting coverage to a ridiculously low dollar amount or limiting the frequency that replacements are allowed- no matter the medically necessity.

It's great that GMA stepped in to help this woman... but there needs to be a LAW protecting the rights of amputees to have fair coverage for prosthetics.

The Amputee Coalition of America (ACA) is holding a lobby day on Capitol Hill on March 10, 2009.  Amputees are being urged to attend and have their voices heard.  Let Congress see that there are actual people being the statistics.  We will be pushing for the passage of the Prosthetic Parity Act... a law that will force group insurance companies to realize that mobility and independence are not luxuries.

Amputees interested in attending should contact the ACA at (202) 742-1886, or visit www.amputee-coalition.org to learn more.

Ideas to fund travel to Capitol Hill for this important event:

  • Ask friends and family for donations
  • Approach local business to sponsor travel costs
  • Hold a fundraiser

Don't miss out on this historic event!
