BCBS of FL Changes Position Statement on Myo Arms & Microprocessor Legs

jenrobinson

As of 03/26/2009 BlueCross BlueShield of Florida has reportedly changed its position statement on myoelectric upper extremity and microprocessor lower extremity prostheses.  Prior to this, these prosthetic devices were considered covered if they met a specific criteria, which involved, among other things, the patient's functional strength, cognitive abilities, and desire to ambulate.

I always recommend re-checking insurance benefits prior to billing.  There are many changes in coverage that can occcur during the fitting process, like a termination in coverage, etc... Case in point.  BCBS changed its coverage position statement in March, not January, and on an arbitrary day of the month.  We did not receive any notification of this change, not by the insurance company, the manufacturer, or the patient.

So, what's the solution?  Check benefits often throughout the fitting process.  Talk to a variety of insurance representatives until you are certain you have received consistent and accurate information.
