Not Wearing a Cover

jenrobinson

When new amputees first hear that a 'temp', or initial, prosthesis isn't cosmetically finished, many are usually pretty unhappy.  Sure, there are reasons why this type of prosthesis doesn't have a cover (search article 'The 411 on Temp Prostheses' for more information).  But just because there a reason behind this logic, it doesn't make it easy for the prosthetic user.  I have seen people who were initially unwilling to even put on a prosthesis that wasn't covered and eventually, through acceptance, they were able to overcome this concern.  Whether or not to wear a cosmetic cover is a very personal decision.  I decide not to.  But I don't think that's 'right'.  It's just my preference.  I think wanting a prosthesis to look real is totally understandable.  I do think that there is a level of freedom in not wearing a cover.  In some repects, I suppose it's a public statement.  To me, it says, I'm OK with this.
