Ossur - Total Knee 1900
Love the Total Knee 2000
by Jenrobinson on 2/26/2010 12:47:31 PM
The Total Knee 1900, which is featured here, is for lower activity, single speed walkers. I currently use the Total Knee 2000, which is for active people that walk at variable speeds. I love how reliable this unit is. You do have to 'think & work' when you use this knee unit, unlike with microprocessors which (supposedly) do the 'thinking & working' for you. It's important for me to keep my muscle tone, so I like the active muscle control required to use this knee. I also like how small, lightweight, and streamlined it is. It is also very good at keeping up with me when I have to increase my walking speed. When it breaks, it's easy & cheap to get it fixed. Because I have so much clearance, I can pretty much use any foot I want with it. There are many adjustments the prosthetist can make to get it just right for me. It's stable for me and it has never buckled. The biggest drawback is that you have to 'unlock' it before you sit down. This can be a pain, especially if you have something in your hands, and ESPECIALLY getting in a car. Going down ramps/stairs is no fun either with this knee, but I don't live in a particularly hilly city. Whenever I find myself going down a ramp or running around on uneven terrain, I always find myself missing my microprocessor knee. But otherwise, I'm very happy with this knee. In prosthetics, there is no perfect device. There are pros and cons for every component and as a user- it's about prioritizing. I love this knee, but I'm always looking out for new things. I'll be interesting to hear others talk about this device. We all have such different opinions and our situations are so unique.
